Last week, OBI Property received the Insider Award for Commercial Fit-Out of the Year for its £2.4 million (63,000 sq ft) refurbishment of Rentalcars.com international customer service centre at Sunlight House in Manchester.
OBI provided project management and cost consultancy services to Rentalcars.com, delivering the project in just 12 weeks.
OBI was also workplace consultant and interior designer. With Manchester at the heart of the creative concept, OBI Property drew inspiration from the city and its people. The themes were decided when over 100 Rentalcars.com colleagues gathered together with the OBI Property design team to share ideas for each floor.
Darius Baniabassian, the Workplace Consultant for OBI Property explains, “It became clear during our creative workshops with Rentalcars.com, that the goal was to landmark the cultural importance of Manchester in the hearts and minds of their colleagues, many of which originate from across the globe. We wanted them to identify that they are part of something special“
A focal point of the office is the Café, based on the iconic Manchester nightclub the Hacienda. OBI Property has taken the famous traffic bollards, and yellow and black chevrons and incorporated them into the design of 3,000 sq ft business catering and event space. A 2.5m high wall made of reclaimed speakers houses a digital jukebox which blasts out over 100 different songs by Mancunian artists ranging from the Smiths to Everything Everything.
Each of the five floors is inspired by icons intrinsic to Manchester’s rich heritage, including ‘Science and Industry’, ‘The Northern Quarter’ and ‘Manchester Culture.’
OBI commissioned two of Manchester’s most renowned artists to make bespoke pieces for the space. Graffiti artist Kelzo has decorated the meeting rooms and corridors on the Northern Quarter floor.
Mosaic artist Mark Kennedy, whose work features on the walls of Afflecks Palace, created a feature mosaic wall for another meeting room on the same Northern Quarter floor.
The judges of the Insider Awards said “Rentalcars’ trust in OBI to deliver on this brief in an iconic building was testament to the company’s reputation.”
